Last month, Margot Robbie told Vanity Fair that the female-centric Pirates of the Caribbean movie that she’d been developing with Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) had walked the plank. But that ship may not have sailed just yet, according to Jerry Bruckheimer (who’s produced all the Pirates films, including At World’s End, pictured above).

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Robbie said, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”
But in a recent interview with The Wrap, Bruckheimer sounded more optimistic. The producer said, “We developed two scripts at once and the Margot Robbie script was a little further away, but we’ll get that made down the line too and focus on more of an ensemble Pirates movie at this point.”
Over the years, several people have been attached to a new Pirates film. In 2018, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were attached to a reboot. They left the project in 2019; Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and longtime Pirates franchise writer Ted Elliott were next to sign on. The Wrap’s interview with Bruckheimer doesn’t say who is still involved with the in-development current project(s).
It’s not surprising that Disney would like to revive its surprisingly successful based-on-a-theme-park-ride franchise, but it remains to be seen how badly audiences want to hop on board.
